چکیده
(Received for publication, April 25, 1959) It is no doubt that diabetes mellitus occurs as a result of deficiency in insulin due to hypofunction of the pancreatic Langerhans' islet cells, but no one nowardays would call diabetes mellitus a disease caused by a mere change in the Langerhans' islets. At present, diabetes mellitus is considered to be due to disturbance of some endocrine organsl)2)3) With recent striking advances in the chemistry of enzymes and hormones, the role of hormones in the metabolism of sugar is becoming more understood. In summary, the presently accepted antiinsulin system is something as follows.

Characteristics of the increased adrenocortical function observed in many obese patients.
Evidence of increased adrenal cortical function has been found in 30 to 60q' of obese people. In a group of obese individuals reported by US,^ those with increased adrenal cortical function manifested high urinary 17-hydroxycorticosteroids (17-OHCS) and high cortisol secretion rates (CSR). However, plasma 17-OHCS were lower than normal, and more of the secreted cortisol was converted to Porter ...
متن کاملFunction of the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla in diabetics.
The importance of the adrenal cortex in diabetes mellitus has been emphasized since the demonstration that the removal of the adrenals would lead to amelioration of diabetes in a depancreatectomized animal,) and that the administration of adrenal extract or hormones would produce an experimental diabetes.2) It is well known that the tumors or hyperplasia of the adrenal cortex are often associat...
متن کاملAdrenocortical function before and after cardiac operations of infants under hypothermia.
Adrenocortical functions were studied in 15 infants under 1 year of age, operated on under hypothermia for congenital cardiac diseases consisting mainly of ventricular septal defect. Adrenocortical functions were examined preand postoperatively, by eosinophil cell count in the peripheral blood and determi nation of urinary output of 17-OHCS and 17-KS. Thorn's test was also done before operation...
متن کامل[A case of isolated ACTH deficiency with dementia].
We encountered a patient with siolated ACTH deficiency accompanying dementia. A 69-year old man was admitted because of abdominal pain. A decrease of serum Na level (114mEq/l) due to increased urinary Na excretion suggested the existence of adrenal insufficiency. While serum cortisol and urinary 17-OHCS, 17-KS excretions were reduced, plasma ACTH level remained below the normal range. Since dai...

Two brothers with DIDMOAD syndrome are reported. The older brother has diabetes mellitus (type I), diabetes insipidus, optic atrophy, deafness and atonia of the urinary tract with severe symptoms such as diabetic ketoacidosis and frequent urinary tract infections. His younger brother had the same manifestations but with less severity. We report the findings of our two patients and compare ...
